IBM System i

Integrated application servers mean fast implementation, high performance, and near-zero maintenance and downtime for thousands of ready-to-run business solutions.

The System i is a powerful application server using i5/OS as its operating system and DB2 as its built in database. It has the ability to support the latest hardware and software technologies including Java, UNIX, SQL, and Linux. In addition, the System i supports e-commerce applications.

Compared with other products and systems, the System i and its software systems are more stable, secure, efficient, and have a lower total cost of ownership.

The System i is a midrange server designed for small and medium sized businesses and departments in large enterprises. It works well in distributed networks with Web applications. The System i uses the PowerPC microprocessor with its 64-bit RISC technology.

With disk storage, memory, and processing power to rival mainframes and a Java virtual machine closely tied into the operating system, IBM has made the IBM System i a versatile, all purpose server. The System i can easily replace PC and Unix servers, including web servers, in the world's businesses.

The System i succeeded another highly popular product, the IBM System/36 and was itself based on a later, more sophisticated product, the IBM System/38. System i customers can choose from thousands of applications that have already been written and widely tested. More and more of these applications have been web-enabled, and IBM software products like WebSphere and Lotus Domino continue to lead the way in application web-enablement.

  • Web and E-commerce Serving: Equipped with a Web server and applications designed to support e-commerce (taking orders, tracking orders, providing service to customers, working with partners and suppliers) and with firewall capabilities, the System i ® handles Internet serving with ease, all controlled from within your own organization.
  • Corporate Groupware Services: With Domino and Notes "built-in", the System i ® is designed to quickly provide a corporation with sophisticated e-mail, project file sharing, whiteboards, and electronic collaboration with calendaring functionality.
